Romanesque Art and Architecture, arts and architecture of western Europe from about ad 1000 to the rise of the Gothic style (see Gothic Art and Architecture), in most regions by the latter half of the 12th century, in certain regions somewhat later.
The French Romanesque schools of architecture are characterized by a varied use of vaulted styles. Even in
Provence, the center of the most conservative of the schools, the nave is usually covered with a barrel vault. In proportions and details, however, the Provençal churches closely follow Roman examples.
